Today was the day I took the plunge and started eating green smoothies throughout the day and a primarily raw food diet. I say primarily because I’m still learning about eating raw food and I’m sure I’ll mess something up along the way and eat a cooked item. I also want to allow myself to have cooked food as I make this transition. During my research of transitioning to a raw food diet, I have read many stories and most say that there was a period of detoxification and that if somebody transitions too fast, the detox from cooked, processed foods will be worse. I would hate to see what that would look like.

Green Smoothie Revolution bookI started the day off with a green smoothie from Victoria Boutenko’s book, Green Smoothie Revolution. If you have never read the book, I highly suggest it to learn more about the benefits of green smoothies and also get pages of green smoothie recipes. The recipes range from beginners green smoothies to more advanced taste buds with “Green Smoothies for Adventurous Souls”. The beginners green smoothies have more fruit compared to greens until your taste buds change and can explore adding less fruit and more greens.

So, I started with the Tropical Green Smoothie which looked like a flavorful, island tropic drink. The recipes stated that it made 2 quarts; however I only ended up with about 1.5 quarts so I added more of everything to get 2 quarts of green smoothie. The green smoothie was amazing, tasty, and I felt so healthy drinking it. The green smoothie recipe included the following:

  •  Spinach
  •  Pineapple
  •  Mango
  •  Banana
  •  Water
  •  Ice

Of course to blend, I found, through research, the best blender to make all of your smoothie concoctions is a VitaMix blender. I was so happy to see that Costco sold the Vita-Mix 5200 blender for almost $50 less than the normal retail price. It’s the most expensive blender I’ve ever purchased; however it’s well worth the price. In the past, I had blown out the motors of at least 4 blenders trying to crush ice and blend frozen fruits, but nothing can beat the Vita-Mix blender in my opinion.

The VitaMix 5200 comes with a tamper so you can easily push your fruit and vegetables into the blade and create an evenly blended smoothie. My fiancé loves the strawberry sorbet that is creamy, smooth, and nutritious without any processed foods. Okay, I’m getting off track a bit, but suffice to say, this is the best blender I’ve ever had and it’s changed the whole way I blend.

The green smoothie was divided up into 4 different insulated drinking containers so that the smoothie would stay cold and fresh throughout the day. I found the Camelbak metal insulated bottles to work really well and it’s free from any BPA, chemicals, and keeps the smoothie cold.

I drank the smoothies throughout the day, maybe 2-3 hours apart, but decided for lunch to have a black bean and avocado salad since the green smoothie only had about 400 calories total. The salad included:

  • Black beans
  •  Tomato
  •  Green bell pepper
  •  Cilantro
  •  Cucumber
  •  Avocado
  •  Red onion
  •  Lime juice
  •  Olive oil
  •  Salt & pepper

This was an amazing salad that was fresh, tasty, full of goodness, and filled me up. I also drank about an ½ cup of Odwalla carrot juice as a snack. I actually poured 1 cup, but I think I’m going to have to develop a taste for carrot juice. I’ve never had carrot juice before and it has a very different taste than most juices. I’m going to try and drink carrot juice each morning, then start on my green smoothies, and a nice salad, nuts, fresh vegetables, and fruit throughout the rest of the day.

I’m still learning this lifestyle of eating a primarily raw food diet and hope that I can continue on this journey to become the healthiest that I can, lose weight, regain my health skin and hair, and feel energized. I’m looking forward to the benefits of eating vegan and raw food.
