Ideal Protein really does work!
Yep, I was a skeptic after all of the diets I've been on, but it really does work.
I'm not hungry, which is apparently due to ketosis, defined in Wikipedia:
If the diet is changed from a highly glycemic diet to a diet that does not provide sufficient carbohydrate to replenish glycogen stores, the body goes through a set of stages to enter ketosis. During the initial stages of this process, blood glucose levels are maintained through gluconeogenesis, and the adult brain does not burn ketones. However, the brain makes immediate use of ketones for lipid synthesis in the brain. After about 48 hours of this process, the brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly use the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus avoiding the depletion of the body's protein store in the muscles.
The education I received from Dr. DuBois was as described above as the science behind Ideal Protein. Because we're not eating sugar, our pancreas is actually resting and not producing as much glycogen. The Ideal Protein foods, higher in protein, are the perfect amount of protein for our muscles which supports and stabilizes the current muscle; therefore, the body will use fat stores – I have a lot of those – to burn for energy.
Though the diet is lower in calories, it's actually getting the additional calories/energy from the fat stores instead of muscle resulting in ketosis and little hunger pangs. I love that!
That's one of the hardest parts of trying to lose weight – temptation, cravings, and hunger pangs. No hunger pangs generally – at least for me – leads to less cravings.
I really feel like this is something that I'll be able to sustain for the long haul.
Okay, for the weigh-in results – drum roll please………
I lost 4 lbs and 1.3 inches!
That's pretty cool. I know others have lost a lot more the first week, but a 4 lb weight loss seems reasonable to me.
Stay tuned to next weeks weigh in………..
