This is a great question that comes up frequently.
Yes, my menstrual cycle has been irregular since starting my diet. It doesn't matter if it's Ideal Protein or any other diet. When you have a lot of weight to lose – your cycle will most likely be effected by the weight loss.
It's the same reason we can experience hair loss during losses of a lot weight.
As you lose weight – fat is being lost through the diet. As the fat melts off, it will release anything that is inside the fat cell like toxins and hormones.
These hormones play a major role in why our menstrual cycle changes during dieting.
The first month of dieting I was normal. The second month my cycle lasted for over a month. The third month my cycle was so heavy and I was cramping so much that I had to stay home for two days from work. Awful!
Now it's back to normal – but I still have about 80 lbs to lose so I imagine I will still have swings with the cycle.
The good news is that once you lose all of your weight your cycle should be more regulated and normal since your hormones will hopefully be more balanced.
I'm not a doctor, but this is what I have discovered through research and experience. If you've been on your cycle for more than 4-6 weeks, I'd probably see a physician to make sure there aren't any other issues.
I also drink lots and lots of water during this time of the month to hopefully help flush out the toxins and keep everything moving. I don't know if it helps, but I feel better doing it.
